I bought a vertical grip for my Nikon D3200 very shortly after i got the camera. The reason for the grip was that the camera is too small for my hands. With the grip (an unofficial one since there is no official Nikon grip for this class of cameras) i bought an additional battery. Since the grip can take two batteries at the same time, i have been using the camera with the grip and both batteries ever since.

My dilemma is: Is there any reason not to use both batteries at the same time? Should i expect more run time from the two batteries if i use them one at a time?

One practical problem (not a big one , though)for example is when the battery tandem is exhausted, my camera is practically unusable until i recharge at least one of the batteries (i have only one charger).

Any thoughts on this? Anybody done comparative capacity/runtime tests?

I purchased a third party VG for my Sony. it holds two batteries as well. One battery powers the camera,the other is spare.
Just a tip keep an eye on the other batter and charge as necessary.

BTW my grip is a Meike Brand I have had no issues at all with it

I ran both the D90 and D7100 on Nikon grips with 2 batteries in, and even if one of the batteries is exhausted you can continue to shoot with the other one. You can also do a mini-charge on a battery of 15 minutes or so, though it's always best to shoot with a fully charged one.

Re battery life...if you're shooting lots of bursts, or are out in very cold weather, or are using a flash a lot...all contribute to shortened battery run time.
