Has anyone here used a financial planner (the paid kind)?

We are considering one...though I'm having second thoughts as to whether it's worthwhile. We were just looking to see if we were doing things right regarding retirement planning. But it's not cheap...it will be around $1500, for the analysis and a "year of support".

If you used one, let me know how you feel they helped (and it would be interesting to compare costs. I was thinking of shopping around and talking to a few more, but that's very time consuming because you have to meet with them.)

I don't need a financial planner, I play the lottery.

I don't use them.... but I sometimes pay for a bit of time for advice on a specific topic (by the hour). That is usually to a suit or accountant or alike not to some nebulous advisor.

I would ONLY pay a fee-only advisor... i.e. by the hour. Avoid the sucky ones that charge by AUM or by sales charges or by both (worst of the lot). I also would avoid any with a big name advisor firm... you know the raymond jones or amex or whatever they're called now days as practices have been shady and a lot of pressure for them to sell own brand stuff (look at some of the fines these firms paid... without admitting wrong doing obviously). A lot of the latter start pushing variable annuities or alike :-/

If you're talking about enough $$ most fund families (Vanguard, Fidelity) will give you a free plan with someone who has zip financial interest in your business - especially if you talk about moving stuff to them. A lot of info & cookie cutter plans are on their various websites and maybe that's enough for a double check if that's all you're after.

Another option I cannot recommend enough is diehards.org as has a lot of knowledgable people that will help with any financial topic you can imagine - although it's a niche thought pattern in that crowd.
