Trying to get better disciplined, so I went through my current iPhoto library (my 7th) and deleted over 500 images. I just hate throwing them away but I had to face it -- I was NEVER going to use any of them for anything. Anyone else have trouble purging your photos?

Oh god yes.. I have my digital photo collection from when I first bought my HP 315 in '01.. thousands of photographs.. and I've never deleted a single one.
Now that I have my Fuji (and auto-bracketing).. I'm finding that I won't even delete the over/underexposed photos of a subject I've bracketed! LOL
Yes, yes, and yes. Especially some old ones that were scanned. I am getting better about deleting after my initial view, when I first upload them. That is helping alot.
There was some talk of how the digital age could potentially 'delete' peices of history that only become important after a particular event.
Prime example being Monica Lewinsky hugging President Clinton before the scandal.
Personally I think digital will result in far more photos, if only because of sheer volume of cameras out there today. While one person might delete an potentially important photograph, four others recorded the same event.
You think you've got it bad... I just went to my Pics folder and type DIR /S, here are the results:

And those are all *my* pictures ... not pictures downloaded from the internet or anywhere else.
For years, every roll of film I had developed, I would have them scan and return, first a floppy, then a cd full of pictures. Then a few years ago I went digital and my "collection" just exploded.
And yes, I *do* delete photos. I know I am a packrat, but I do get rid of the truly bad ones (bad focus, bad exposure, bad shot, etc). But the rest of the photos I just can't bring myself to delete.
If you did the math (95,823,791,974 divided by 21642) you'll find that my average file size is over 4M. That, in part, is from my Digital Rebel (purchased in April of this year with over 9000 shots so far). But truthfully reflects a number of files saved either in RAW format or, even moreso, in PhotoShop format (where my file size is often 30M+).
So... how does one go about backing up 95G worth of photos?
Certainly not to CD. Can you imagine burning 190 CD's for one backup? And DVD really isn't much better at 20 DVD's (and the corresponding amount of time and money that would be necessary just to burn 20 DVD's).
Nope... I bought an external 200G Maxtor USB drive for about $200. On a regular basis I resynch my internal hard drive's copy of photos to the external drive. That way I always have a backup in case some day I lose my internal drive.
Crazy, huh? Some day I might slow down ... but hoping to some day purchase a camera with, say, 11-15 mp, it probably won't happen soon.
I make a backup to CD or DVD every time I download pictures from the camera, so I can retrieve any digital photo I've taken. But I do try to delete unusable photos from my hard drive as I go.
I've got about 32GB now of imageas off my 10D (just the RAW and JPGs from the actual camera)... if you included the post processed versions of the good ones, then it pushes up to around 45GB. Yay for harddrive cheapness!
oh man, this is something I really need to do. I have 5 years worth of digital images, plus all the edits and the ones I have duplicated on my web site. Im just guessing its about 50,000 images or more

I don`t have much problem deleting them,I cleaned out just over 5,000 last week! It`s just very time consuming! I would have to say less than 10% I keep after reviewing 1-2year old shots. It has to mean someting to me or its gone! I`m down to 11,600 files in my pics folder.I still need to clean some more but I will buy a new 160G hard drive and this will help storage problems!My docs is just over 20G currently
