OK so here's the whole sorry tale. I had a D90, Snow Leopard, PS CS5, and iPhoto. Had NO PROBLEMS uploading RAWs and working from them in PS.
But then I upgrade my camera and since then have had only one hassle atop another. In order to get a version of iPhoto that would import RAWs from the D7100, I had to upgrade to Mavericks. Then downloaded a DNG plugin because PS CS5 won't open the RAWs.
Now the f***I DNG converter will not open RAWs that I imported using iPhoto, and I do not have $700 kicking around to buy frickin PS CS6 with. Apparently it will now recognize only RAWs imported via ViewNX, which I absolutely hate.
At my wit's end. And yes, Tiny, I am seriously considering taking up knitting.
Sounds like a bit of a nightmare, frankly. I'm left wondering what the heck iPhoto is doing that buggers the DNG converter? I would suggest that one easy solution is to ditch iPhoto, and just drag & drop to move from the camera to the Mac, then go directly to the DNG converter.
Now, if you are using iPhoto for cataloging, perhaps this isn't a perfect solution. What I would personally do is make the investment of time to learn and use Lightroom. It uses the same RAW engine as Ps, and makes importing, cataloging, rating/culling, developing and exporting a breeze. I always recommend reading a little on how to get Lr set up and configured to best match your workflow before installing it.
Capture One is a full-featured RAW converter. It is, however expensive compared to, for instance Adobe Lightroom. It is well liked by those who use it. I found it clunky, but the last version I used was two or three full versions ago.
Not to be pedantic, but the Nikon RAW file format is NEF. DNG is Adobe's creation. If you're just throwing that around as a generic substitute for RAW, disregard this, but if you really are specifically using a DNG plug-in to import a DNG from a Nikon camera to iPhoto, I can see why it wouldn't work. At this stage the "DNG" file doesn't exist.

But the Nikon D7100 people themselves are touting DNG as a solution!!!! Check out the link in the other thread that addresses D7100s and RAW files...NEFs....whatever.
At this point I really no longer care anymore. No matter what I enter my scores are sucking balls - I am doing a self-DQ on my most recent entry - I am so f***in sick of upgrades and plugins that don't work. I am seriously read to throw in the towel and use the $$ I've saved so far for my next lens and go spend it on something else.
