3 days I've sat wiping this putor that wouldn't get on line, and restoring.. Got PS5 back up and running, OH BUT GUESS WHAT??? It does NOT support a RAW file from my new D7100, soo I go and down load that DNG convertor, Welll now this is unpleasant, I always shoot in RAW, and the Time it takes to convert those photos to DNG so PS can open in camera raw is well, It certainly makes me NOT WANT TO SHOOT RAW... Lovely great new camera, more time just to even see the stupid photos.
SOOOOO Oh Smart Ones who live here, WHAT can I do? Is there some way around all this extra crap? I know PS wants me to upgrade to 6, kaching $$ I haven't even mastered CS5...
Very rarely do I really want to cry, but between explorer 11 not acting like my old one did, reloading all my junk, and worst the RAW issue, I really want to cry!!!!!

PS I no longer have the little dingy thingy at the lower right hand side of my screen to increase the size of the printing or pictures, I have to go apply and log out and then everything is 125%... Some one told me about a ? control+ something that would increase the size of things?? Anyone know what it is? I don't have strong enough glasses to see this at 100%
Humm Alex, what do you mean by updating camera raw?? Lightroom never used it, compatible with all NIK n topaz filters?? AND I know what to do in PS, I'm use to it and actually like it, NOT to freaking mention the $$$$$$$ I paid for the whole friggin kitten kabootel
In any case converting them to DNG should be ok. I used to convert raw files when I got the D7000, then I upgraded Photoshop to CS6 and now CC and I don't need it.
ETA: after converting the files to DNG, you can work in camera raw exactly the way you did it with the original raw.

I know it's a waste of space... but in the future, in case you are going to upgrade your software, you'll be able to delete your DNG files - that's what I've mostly done with some of my old files.
Don't you have Nikon's ViewNX2 software installed. You will at least be able to see the RAW images then.
Another option is Photoshop Elements. It has a simplified RAW software included and you can make the DNG format from there, as far I can tell.

Can't you shoot RAW + JPEG and use the JPEGs for previewing/screening/culling/Minimal challenge entries?

I used it on some shots I took and they looked really dark, on that but are actually nice when converted.... Well off to try to download topaz again, NIK I will have to wait cause they're not open or automated ....

I guess it's the same as with CS, you most probably needs the latest version of Elements, but it is not very expensive. As for ViewNX2, I only use it to view my images at first, just to decide which one I'm going to use. And as you can view RAW images as well, you can decide which one to convert to DNG.
OMG my eyes are crossed! I am wondering now, if I go buy a newest version of Elements, and it would open the d7100 raw files, if I'd have to save each as a tiff to open them in the real PS? finally got done uploading everything but my NIK filters went around snapping bad shots of the cats n dog, then tried both ways, Found out that DNG converter will not just do one pix, it has to select a file and convert the whole thing, sooooo there I go, I really don't understand the ViewNX2, Is there a way to send the selected photos to a file and loose the rest? I've never used that thing and (my brain is wiped like this computer was) but I didn't seem to see a way to do nuthin' except view the pix?? Thanks for all your help!

Reason for pointing out ViewNX2 was that it gives you the possibility to view the RAW files in order to determine which image(s) you want to convert to DNG with software other than ViewNX2. But it would be easier to use Lightroom (full set of ACR tools) or Elements (only a partial set of ACR tools) to open the files and save them in some other format. I normally use Elements to work on my RAW files (because I find working with Elements easier than CS5), then save them into psd or tiff format and when needed I always can open them in CS5 to do some additional adjustments.

Just learned Bridge in nothing PS6 elem 11 light room, will NOT show the newest NEF files... That's where I do ALL my culling and viewing, I am a creature of habit I do not adapt to new ways of doing things very well!!! I will turn growly, and snap at any male creature that enters my zone.... Hubs is building him a man cave in his shop as we speak, SMART MAN...

You can use Lightroom to organize, view, do most editing, and raw conversion. From within Lightroom, you can open and edit files in other apps, including current and older versions of PS, and Nik (don't know about Topaz, but I suspect so). Seriously,I know it comes from the evil Adobe empire, but it's what you're looking for.
For the files preview you can use Fast Stone (it's a freeware software), otherwise if you have a Mac you should be able to see the RAW files if your computer has the last updates.

HeyKroburg Nikon Transfer Pro, Whats that? I thought it was view NX2 I could see the thumbnails while the camera was hooked up save them but that was insane wanted to take 10 mins to save to a file, and then couldn't open... So where is this NX2???

For what it's worth, you can probably buy a used one from the same era at a low enough cost that even with the additional cost of purchasing a PC first you'll still be saving money over what a Mac would have cost you in the first place.
