As far as my opinion...1TB of free storage sounds pretty awesome. If I want to show my work without ads, I either use my personal website or tumblr, where I have more control of the display.
Flickr recently rolled out changes to their site layout. For most people they're unpopular. For some (including me), they don't even work. The image page is broken. Flickr has been nonresponsive to the user backlash. I have to run Flickr in German to even use it. (The change was only rolled out to English-speaking users -- i.e. those whose language is set to English).
As far as having "nothing better to do," there's no expense of time beyond uploading the protest image to your stream. Since Flickr hasn't responded via any other means, maybe they'll respond to this.

I couldn't agree more. I got invited to join Black Day and I had no idea what it was. And after reading the petition (which basically said "we don't want any changes"), I dismissed the notion, it's absurd. The only real issues I have with Flickr are that their mobile interface SUCKS and that there is no way for you to know if one of your images has made Explore! unless someone else mentions it, or you use third party software like Scout.
But that is not what the protest about, Brian. At least not in any of the links I've read on the subject. Basically, the protesters want the old look back. There's no mention of functionality.
So maybe I'm on the sidelines. Flickr has been notorious about rolling out poorly tested functionality and making it such that you don't have the option to revert or choose between layouts. They've also been totally unresponsive to complaints from paying members and users. I've been following discussions there (in the Help forum, for instance) and much of the backlash is due as much to broken functionality as to those who just don't like the changes. Any protest that gets the powers that be at Flickr to listen, I'm on board with.

It's exactly like every change in the Facebook UI. Everyone complains for a week, then forgets about it.
I enjoy the new layout for the most part. There are improvements to be made, and I have sent in those ideas. Being a software developer, I know change doesn't happen immediately. If good processes are in place, there is a lot of scrutiny of even the smallest changes before they go live.
I see that you had some issues with it working. That is bad, and should be fixed; but see above, it's not always easy/quick to diagnose the problem and get the fix out.
I for one, will be posting extra images to Flickr, to combat the dumb "protest."
I like the new layout too. One thjing everyone was complaining about was that images "stuck" to the top instead of floating, and that seems to be fixed now... I like the panel on the right, very useful.

I'm a software developer also, Mike. I don't make software changes in a vacuum, roll them out without warning, and then not answer the phone when users complain. I don't think you do either.

I agree, the protest seems to be against change in general. As for mobile, I haven't had any real issues viewing on tablets. What sucks about it?
Me Flickr user... Me likes Flickr very much, no image downsizing during upload, quality superb... Me wishes to see larger version of ribbon winners on front of DPC too... It might be time for that alone!

How is a comparison of the number of images uploaded to these two sites even remotely relevant? The two sites have entirely different missions and structures. It's rather like saying Joe's burger stand only sold eighty burgers yesterday while McDonalds sole eighty thousand ... so what?

The two are not mutually exclusive. I can assure you Flickr has more quality than DPC. Granted, given the high volumne of photos over there it can be harder to find. For starters dont go looking to Explore for Flickrs best photographs, because they are most certainly not there.
