Looking to upgrade my system with an SSD drive and I have a couple of questions.

1. What size should I go with? I will be running PS, LR, the Office suite, etc.

2. Do I set up the scratch disk area on the SSD?

3. Lightroom catalog on SSD?

I'd say put the operating system and applications on the SSD, and all data (and catalogs, etc.) on an external hard drive. Whether you assign the SSD as the scratch disk depends on how much room you have left over, but Photoshop will be much faster if you can do it.

I did this recently and I went with 256Mb and a fast 3Gb 7200rpm spinning drive based on this :-

- All data I pushed to the spinning drive.
- I installed any non critical programs also on the spinning drive.
- OS and LR/PS and office are installed on the SSD.
- A stack of my kids heavy duty games are also on the SSD - compromise to keep him happy :-)
- LR/PS cache files are also on SSD.
- I also split the LR database and images themselves onto different spinning drives (multiple for the images as too many for a single drive)... but that's a bit overkill :-)
- First time I have EVER seen LR run well :-( (it's got a crap load of cpu and memory under it as well).

- Windows is a pathetically sloppy os [surprise surprise in a gomer pile type voice]... some stuff will still go to "C" but change the "libraries" gets most of the stuff onto the spinning drive. The roaming data will still hit "C" (unless you're prepared to hit the registry and move them which I don't suggest).

Just make sure you cover everything for backup purposes as that gets messy.....
