I know I am probably going to get some gripe from some people, but I want to find out if anyone else feels how I do...

I don't feel that there is much variation in Photographic styles these days. No disrespect to anyone - there are some amazing photographs here. But I feel that many have the same feel to them. I won't go into my feelings about what makes a great photograph, but aren't styles supposed to make you stand out?

There are some incredible shots of skies, lakes, water and mountains, though to me they look all too similar. I know we all have our own tastes and I am by no means telling anyone that they aren't good, I just think that photography as a whole seems to be falling too much into the same patterns. I've not seen many people trying something significantly different and sticking to it.

I'd love to hear what people think. I am not one for talking on forums because I have all too often seen comments like mine cause massive arguments, but we are all photographers here and I feel I can get a good and interesting discussion going. Please private message me as well if you'd like to discuss things one-to-one.

I don't think your observations are specific to this site, nor perhaps even to the times. Success is SO hard to achieve that when someone achieves it, it spurs armies of copycats hoping to cash in on the style. Diversity suffers.

In the time I've been here, I've seen the favored "style" change from one thing to another, several times over. In addition to my above thought, this is also a learning site, so if there is an interesting new "style", it is only natural for us to try to emulate it in an attempt to learn new stuff.

I also do believe that there are a significant number of DPCers who have found their own style and stuck to their guns. Unfortunately, their style may rarely finish in the top 50% of a challenge, which is why they're mostly seen by those who already know (and enjoy) them.

Wow - Johanna covered the major points that came to mind when I read the OP. She is definitely right about the fact that the popular (with voters) styles are what are always visible on this site, but there is a diversity of unique styles in the mid-lower half finishers in most challenges. What you see on the front page only represents a tiny fraction of the varieties of styles represented on DPC.

I also don't recall any heated arguments over the issue of style - I could be wrong, but still no reason to fear or worry about kicking off a discussion. :)

Spend a bit more time looking. And look in the side challenges and in people's portfolios. The stuff submitted for the challenges is mostly aimed at popular appeal rather than artistic exploration.
