I've had my original iPad since they first came out, even before they were available in the UK; and although I've bought newer versions as gifts, I've never felt the need to upgrade myself - the added features have never been compelling.
Even today, Apple continue to insist on giving us thinness rather than maintaining thickness and giving more battery life; and still they omit the killer feature that would have me upgrading on release day. That feature? The ability to use an iPad as a second monitor to a MacBook Pro.
When I'm working away, I really miss a second monitor. To be able to connect an iPad via Thunderbolt to a MacBook Pro as a second display would be a most compelling reason to buy. Can it really be that hard to implement? I can't believe it hasn't been considered (and software solutions are useless).
What are your thoughts? Would you pay for this feature? Why do you think it hasn't been implemented?
I find it fascinating that Apple's incremental upgrading of processor and camera is still considered news every time they do it. Frankly, it's getting boring. you're right, if they add some NEW feature, then it might be newsworthy. But, the fanboys and fangirls will still be lining up on release day.
(and before you flame, I own both and iPhone 5 and an iPad mini (which replaced my broken Android tablet) and my wife has an iPhone 5 and iPad 2, so I'm not an Apple hater)
I have an iPad 2 and I see no reason to upgrade. Why are better processors important on these tablets if they don't improve battery life? There isn't much that is processor intensive that one runs (not talking about graphics).

I'm looking for a replacement to my iPad 2, which I stupidly packed in my check-on luggage, and was promptly plucked by the TSA screeners...
Anywho, I'm also considering the Surface 2, but the earlier version. At under $500, it seems like a pretty sweet deal. The only thing I really, really, really dislike about the entire apple system is their stupid iTunes management software. Absolutely NO flexibility whatsoever, and EVERYTHING is dependent on it. I can't put my files where I want them...
I went to the store to buy the original ipad, then didn't, because when I picked it up in the store, it was too heavy. I eventually decided the most recent model was light enough, got that, and haven't put it down since.
I never thought it was heavy until I moved to a place where I don't really drive during the week, and started carrying everything I need for work on my back. Now suddenly, every ounce counts, and it's surprising how heavy an ipad feels in the daypack next to the laptop, the lunch, and the hat and gloves.
Anyway, I'm not upgrading this time around. Not enough difference between models. But lighter always sounds good to me.

The feature is available through an App. There is a free (Ad supported) version to try it. I think the full Ad-free version is $9.99. I know someone who had this a few ears ago and he was very happy with it.

Okay, I said I wasn't going to upgrade this time around, but it's my anniversary today, and it was a very nice gift.
The new one is very noticeably smaller, thinner, and lighter than the 4th gen ipad. If that's important to you, then it's important to you, and this is a good upgrade. It'll definitely be good for me.
Other than size and weight, the only differences I've noticed so far are that scrolling is smooth again (after the iOS 7 update on the old one, scrolling got a bit jittery), and the sound coming out of the little built-in speaker is better. Not awesome, but better.
I suppose the camera is better or something, but I never actually used the camera on the old one.
By the way, why does folks have two screens is it to do with the number of eyes ?

For me I struggle to think with just one screen for work, if I'm doing any academic work, one screen is a conceptual space for reading or bulleting thoughts or making a diagram and a working fair draft of my paper will be on the other screen. For admin tasks, calendar on one, email on the other; for marking, student script on one, notes/marking criteria on the other. Video editing FCP is much easier to use across two screens, I keep one screen for bins, the other for the editing space. Etc etc...

Essentially what I do as we'll. my main work task (programming, usually) are on one screen, and side tasks (email, calendar) are on the laptop screen.
what really annoys me about my ipad and my ipad mini is why when i connect it to my camera cant i view the images full screen before i import.
64gb cf card in my 5dmk3 plugged into a 16gb ipad minni doesnt work but it'd be great if i could view the images full screen and then deicide which ones i want to pull off to use, found this really annoying on our two weeks in america
my ipad series 1 is notable slower than my newest mini
