I am running Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.7 on a Mac mini. I desperately need an update for iPhoto (think the date on my version goes back to 2008(!) so if you know of a site that has safe, free downloads, please let me know!!
Otherwise I will have to resort to using Nikon View NX2, and that will never do. I like iPhoto, it's simple and uncomplicated and I run much less risk of accidentally deleting pix like I just did...*sigh*...
With your new camera and the 24 megapixels get an external hard drive and put everything directly on it. Then load what you want to work with into your iPhoto. Your computer memory will fill up quickly if not.
The 011 version is much better than the 08 version. The software does a much better job with several of the adjustments, and it also has an extra "Definition" slider which will make you very happy that you have it.
The way it handles filing is just a little different, but you will adjust quickly.
If you look in the "Trash" in you Mac, you may find the pix you deleted.
I agree with Enlightened, the ext HD is a good idea. Put the files there first by drag & drop, then eject the card. Then open iPhoto and drag them to iPhoto and you will have a safe copy of the original. You can set preferences so that iPhoto will not auto open when you insert the card.
Great, thanks for the info esp on iPhoto! I have plans to take the new kid on a road trip to Brockville today where there is either a Best Buy or a Future Shop. Either way I should be able to get a 2TB LaCie and some good shots along the way. Definitely, shooting DX means big-ass files (6000x4000 RAWs, anyone?) and forced me to purge 10k in images that were just taking up room on the Mac's hard drive.

But now I can't find my Camera Raw!!! WTF is meant to be? Sigh...something else to buy and install...*grumble grumble*
May not work if it is a newer camera. They made some changes and are not updating the camera raw for CS5. I had to upgrade to CS6 to use the new camera raw with my Fuji.

iPhoto can open the RAW and make general corrections. You can export and open the file in CS5 for extra polish.

Which is what I like to do anyway, just stick in the card and let iPhoto do all the dirty work of downloading. Then I pick the best and export them to PS CS5 and go from there.
So in a nutshell I am running iPhoto '08, and installing iPhoto '11 should take care of everything for me?

I'd wait. OS X Mavericks will be out in two weeks, and if you're banging your head over a $20 OS upgrade several years after your version was discontinued, that might send you over the edge.
Shannon, thanks for the info on Mavericks...but won't I still have to have Lion or Mountain Lion installed before I can use that? And I am going to need to get more RAM too so I can run that?!
BTW it isn't the upgrade costs which cause me frustration. It's the annoyance factor of having to upgrade everything, just because I got a new camera body. I'm used to tottering along on the trailing edge of technology, is all. After all in the horse world, buying a new horse does not mean that you suddenly HAVE to upgrade your equipment, trainer, stables etc....though of course there are those who can and will do, just because they can.
Anyway. I didn't too much damage to the outside walls of my house. This time ;-)

Thank gawd, I can upload Mavericks OS with my puny ol Snow Leopard...I just don't have the time, inclination or patience to humour the capricious whims of planned obsolecence.
The models must also have at least 2 GB of memory, 8 GB of available hard disk space ...and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or higher in order to install OS X Mavericks.
It's like having to buy horse shoes with computer chips in them, because they no longer make the old standard all steel ones. You just have to get used to the idea that things which have always worked great are no longer good enough. I just recently upgraded to the Mac Mini, due to the technology changing enough that my old G5 Powermac could not run the new stuff.
My phone was so old that it had roman numerals on it, and when someone would text me, it came out of a slot in the bottom on a little clay tablet. I had to upgrade that when Nextel changed everything.
Congrats on getting the new 7100 though.
