I just got through looking at the red challenge results and was surprised by the lowness of the scores. I can see now why it is so important for us to vote for all of the submissions. Most of the entries were separated by mere decimal points. Great challenge though. I've learned that more imagination and technique will help in the rankings.
I also was suprised with the results of the red challange. I was not so suprised with the closeness of the score but with the order of the finish. My submission was mediocre, at best, and that is where I finished. However, the top finishers were not as I expected. There were several that I thought would score much higher than they did. That is not to say the winners were not good, they were just not the ones I scored high. Joe
here's what i think happens. when there are a lot of submissions to score, i think that people start off cautiously. they dont want to award a really high score to something right off the bat when there might be something else 'even better' coming up. so by reserving the high numbers, they tend to overall score the images low. i also wouldn't doubt that there is some unconscious "if I vote everyone else kind of average, maybe it will give my own pic a chance to get a better score" motivation going on.
My congratulations to Constance Mcguire for her win in the red contest. Her bio is very inspiring and I am glad she won. I also checked out her URL and boy do we have some competition.
I am waiting for the a new feature that was posted in the "Web site suggestions" forum, where you can sort the photos by your votes in descending order. With this new feature, I can quick go through and give preliminary votes, then sort in descending order, and then give the final votes. Essentially, this would give me a chance to compare all the photos that I gave high prelimnary votes, then pick which I think is the best of the bunch.
It's coming... we've just got a plateful of things to do. More importantly, the better programmer (Langdon, by far) is out of town til Wednesday. It should be up by the next challenge :)
I could be missing something here but I didn't have any problem rating each picture on solely an individual basis. If I thought it was 8/10 as good as I thought it could be taking into account the rules I gave it an 8 and if it was 3/10 what it could be than I gave it a 3. Then I moved on to the next one. I wasn't trying to pick a clear winner. I thought that averaging all of the voter's score's would take care of that. Great competition all the same.
I do, as well. 1 - 3 = subject unclear or technically unacceptable 4 = snapshot w/ weak technicals 5 = eiter subject or technicals okay 6 = good subject or technicals 7 = good subject and technicals 8 = as 7, but with a little something extra 9 = shows great technical prowess and (/ maybe or) subject 10 = don't regulate your breathing waiting for me to hand one out
1 - Don't really give these 2 - Not only is it bad, it irritates me 3 - Poor subject, poor technicals 4 - Poor subject, good technicals, or vice versa 5 - Good subject, good technicals 6 - Impressive subject, good technicals, or vice versa. 7 - Now that's nice! 8 - But this is even nicer than most of the nice ones! 9 - You're so nice you deserve to win (if the competition is good) 10 - Stop it, you're killing me! (I think I've given 1 so far)
Simple, huh?

I hate to be contrary, but contrary I am. I hope we have all passed the point of worrying about our own pics. And being cautious about high votes never entered my mind. I personally open each picture and wait for the impact of the picture to hit me. If I get a "wow", I look at technique and try to see what the photographer is trying to say, which I do with all of them. But the "wows" will get a higher rating and so on down the line. It doesn't matter whether I do them all at once or a few a day, they are judged the same way. Maybe its not the way it should be done, but it seems to work for me.
I don't look at the pictures as competing with each other. I vote on each individual photo as if it is the only one submitted. I may go back later and change one or two to a higher score if I feel they are better overall.
For me it's a combo of Mousie and Irae. I don't give any 1's 2's. I think everyone that posts a shot should at least get a 3. Even if it's the worst I've ever seen they still had the guts to enter. I have given one 10 so far with many 8's and 9's. I try to keep in mind the subject or challenge along with the technicals. I thought the "Red" challenge showed some very good photos.
I do the same, but then I go back to make sure I have been consistent. As it is, when I am done voting I check every photo with its neighbors to see if the one I voted highest for the one I liked best. It is good to keep in mind that liking a photo is not as black and white as voting is, for example, it is entirely possible to like photo A better than B, B better than C, and C better than A. Luckily, A,B, and C will probably all get the same vote on a scale of 1 to 10.
Having the voted on photos ordered by vote will make it much easier to ensure that I have been consistent.
