LED's are getting better, but they still produce only a fraction of the light that a speedlite will put out. So you will need to make compromises in shutter speed or aperture.
It's also important to understand how they operate. A speedlite dumps an insane amount of light in a fraction of a second. But LED's will produce a small amount of light and keep it on for the whole duration of the shutter. With a speedlite that allows you to use any shutter speed you want and still freeze motion. With LED you can only freeze motion by having a fast shutter. Not only that, but the LED doesn't dump all it's light at once so you get less light the shorter your shutter is.
But when it comes to video, LED is king. With video it has to be on all the time anyway, so LED works perfect. |
