Okay, so I had a 24" iMac which had a Fire-wire port on it and I had (have) a card reader for my CF cards and all was good. Unfortunately I had to purchase a new iMac and it does not have needed port so only option is to transfer while card is in-camera. However, the iMac doesn't recognize the camera and only iPhoto boots to transfer pictures. I do not want to use iPhoto for anything. Does anyone know of a way to get the iMac to recognize the camera as the source and let me copy files directly from the card?

Maybe get a newer card reader with the appropriate plug?

This adapter will restore your Firewire reader. The Mac will natively recognize your camera with a direct USB connection (I had a 40D). You determine what happens when you connect the camera (launching iPhoto or whatever) in Image Capture. You can also download photos with Image Capture or drag files directly off the card to a folder. Personally, I like iPhoto, but to each his own.
