Ha! I proposed this idea to my brother a couple of weekends ago, based on his friends who went to France with an iPhone and no camera. Said I should go with them next time to take halfway decent snaps AND get everyone in the picture. :-)
If I could find someone to take me along on their family vacations, I would go. And I would take my husband and kids as assistants. ahhahahahah (hey, a girl can dream, can't she!)
To do something like this you need to live near a wonder of the world. With a permit, I suppose I could set up a stand at Niagara Falls and shoot & print on the spot, tourists. I think the price point wouldn't be very high. You need a rich & famous clientelle.
While we were on vacation in Punta Cana in March, photography was a huge up-sell. Even videography. They usually had some value-add beyond the scenery, however. Swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, on a party-boat. Hanging by the pool... animal props like a live monkey, lizard etc. Or just straight-up portraits.
They made it very easy to spend your money. No planning ahead. You don't pay the roving photographers, you visit the photo office, they pull up your photos, if you like them, you buy them, prints, CD, whatever.
There was also the option of booking a photographer.
I've read about it before, and thought it might be a possibility for the Nikko area, for foreign tourists who don't speak Japanese (and , er, speak English...).
