Yesterday afternoon, Gaston dropped about 14 inches of rain on Richmond, shutting down the interstates, and creating a 10-15 foot deep river through a low-lying part of the city. They had boats pulling people out of the second stories of restaurants. This morning we woke up with 65,000 without electricity and a muddy aftermath. Thankfully, the death toll is below 5; it could have been much, much worse. All the same, it will be weeks before they get this mess cleaned up.
Weirdly enough, since we went to bed without electricity, I had no idea this was going on. I just happened to be 'out and about' this morning and just happened to head downtown. Unbelievable...
Wow! Those are unbelievable pictures! I'm so glad this one missed us down here. I went 4 days without electricity after Isabel last year. Don't want to do that again.
crazy! I'm here in Hampton Va. with my younger brother living in Richmond. I just talked to him and he said it was a steady down pour of rain for seven hours. Hang in there!
The weather this year has been crazy for me. I was in Hurricane Charley and then yesterday Gaston. Also a small tornado touched down two houses down from my grand mothers. Luckily no one was hurt and there was minor damage. I'm glad you weathered the storm alright. I also was in Richmond last year for Isabel too. I'm tired of these tropical storms.
If the predictions about global warming are anything close to reality you'd better get used to it or move inland : )
I've dealt with earthquakes and fires, but luckily never with major flooding -- hope I never do. Glad there was (relatively) little damage this time ...
Good shots Skip. Gaston was a strange one. Here in Baltimore we got nothing like what you did. Just a mild overnight rain, normal summer weather. Glad you made it throught ok.
