A place to compare this new camera to others. Feel free to post your own comparison images.
I wanted to test it compared to the D600. I was also interested in how the Sigma 10-20 compared to the Nikon 16-35 (besides being a heck of a lot smaller and lighter!)
As a somewhat but not perfectly controlled test, here are the two NEFs side by side in Lightroom 4.4 without ANY adjustments. The camera was on manual, and the ISO was on auto...for some reason the D600 picked a slightly higher ISO and hence a bit more exposure. I believe I focused on one of the yellow boat anchor points, but I don't recall exactly right now. In this particular test, to get maximum landscape focus and high ISO for the compare, I used F13. Both handheld.
The captions explain the view. As a pixel peeper, these both seem somewhat noisy to me, but I think you have to get used to peeping at 24 Mpixels...there's going to be grain/noise at relatively high ISOs. (In fact, while this is ISO 2000, I see grain as low as ISO 900 in both). There's obviously somewhat more noise in the D7100, seen throughout, but moreso in the shadows. I zoomed in on the shadow areas particularly for this reason. The exposure was to the right though...so nothing was abnormally underexposed, or overexposed, just reflected the relative light. I have learned with all my Nikons that while they are great at revealing shadow detail, it's best to expose to the right to minimize noise (true on most sensors!)
Note the last image I did 100% shadow recovery, and raised the exposure by .5. There's talk online about the new Toshiba based sensor on the D7100 not being as good at shadow recovery, and also banding in the shadows. I don't see banding, but I do see a bit of false green coloring.
