OK I got creamed in the Landscape Challenge and I have a couple of comments and a question.
I chose the photo that I did because I liked the lens flair, it made me want to squint just like when I was there taking the photo, that was the feeling that I wanted to convey. I also liked the content. Some how I get the feeling that people saw the lens flair and instantly determined that it was a defect in the photo and voted it down. Could that be the case or is the photo really that bad?
Now the question: Which out-take would have done better if any?

I think yes, the lens flare and the totally washed out sky killed you and agree with Annida - that's the one you should have gone with. The lighting on the hillside is great.
We had an absolutely wonderful day out in the Lake District (Northern England) taking shots for this challenge - these outtakes were what I had left after the first 'cull'. I had a very tough time choosing!

Roger, to judge from the comments your photo received, you are right in assuming the lens flare lowered your score. Personally I quite like it, as it does achieve the effect of making me feel I am there.
At least you got some helpfull comments, my entry finished 1 place worse than yours, and only one comment hinted at a reason for a low score, the rest were complimentary. The outtakes from my 20 minute landscape shooting session are here
Maybe I don't understand the rules, but I thought that photo must be taken in one specifed week. Is this correct? Because I know for a fact that one of the winning photos for this challenge was taken in Decembar.

You are correct about the rules. I would suggest contacting the administrators using the contact form on the help menu.
Here is my "outtake" for the landscape challenge. I use quotes, because this image wouldn't have been eligible, as it was taken on Saturday (2 days ago), and I used the dodge tool to bring out the treeline more. But I'm pretty happy with the results. I got this as I was out looking for a street sign photo, and noticed how nice the lake looked, so I had to take this photo. There is a color version on pbase too, but I like this one more for some reason.
p.s.: Are we allowed to directly link images here? I notice there is a button to do that, but I dont see anyone else doing it...

That's a great shot, though personally I prefer the colour version - I just like to see nature in all her technicolour splendour (though I will admit the B&W has a certain mood to it).
The boat shot is great and the misty shot is awesome. Gotta love the layers of trees fading into the distance.

You can, but if you're linking to pbase it will only work if you're a paid pbase member.
bod, I am assuming that the smoke is coming from a house. I don't care for it. It really takes away the detail in the pictures. Did you use a polarizer. I think everyone should invest in one. I just bought one 2 weeks ago. I love it.

I don't think the 'smoke' is coming from a house, we watched it for quite a while and it didn't behave like smoke (it wasn't really moving). Why it is coming mostly from one spot is beyond me :-/
I do have a polarizer, but forgot to put it on till later (the stone circle shots) ... d'oh!

I like 'Receding Trees' the best but I still think 'Blot on the Landscape' should have done much better.

I agree with Annida on this one. I would have voted that an 8. Did you use a polarizer? If not that would of made the blue darker. Try it.

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes I used a polarizer; it was a very hazy day so I really didn’t have must to work with. I loaded the raw image for P1111386.jpg to pbase so you can see how hazy it was.
