I expect some of them were setups, but you might be surprised at what you could find cruising around and a polarizing filter would be a huge aid in cutting down the glass glare.

"He initially approached the project in a unique way.
“I found myself walking around a supermarket car park,” Usborne explained via email, “and when I could see no dogs, I started barking loudly. I realized I would either get arrested or put in some sort of ward, so I decided to set the shots up myself.”
In carefully crafting each image, Usborne began with a sketch of the imagined photo before finding the dogs. He recruited subjects by approaching dog owners while walking his own dogs. He would then find the cars and locations. Usborne described the process: “Although bewildered at first, it was incredible to see how many strangers were so eager to help out and let their dog be photographed. After the dog was found, I tried to match the dog to the car; people aren't as bothered about seeing their car in a book as they are their dog.”

I really don't know. I think they're found, but that's more an impression than based on anything he said. Probably, as Brent said, a combination. The "alone" factor on some of those made me want to cry. Amazing. Glad you all enjoyed them as much as I did.
I should say the loneliness of some of them did make me kind of sad. I hate leaving my dogs alone in the car even for just a short while when I know it isn't going to be too hot for them.

That's a project I've wanted to do for YEARS. I guess I'm not as weird as I thought. Or you're weirder... Whatever :-)
Beautiful Johanna. I always wonder about the motivations behind such talented people. Sometimes digging a little deeper unearths a wealth of humanity. In this case, for me, it is true. His blog is just as compelling.

Interesting photography i felt sad looking at those doggies pics but enjoyed it as the same time wonderful photography..i really liked his portrait of Frank Bruno

Thanks, Wendy. Sometimes people send me stuff (because they know I'm into pictures!!!), sometimes I'll be searching for something unrelated but the results will return an interesting photo, or someone on FB might post something. I'm open to multiple streams :-)

I was driving down the coast on Highway 1, below Santa Cruz today in heavy traffic thinking about this Thread. I saw a little camper van in the lane next to me with a dog looking out the window. As happens with traffic, we both kept passing. still there came a time when we were close enough so that I could grab a shot. With the only available equipment on hand my 70-300 lens. So, avoiding a bunch of traffic, and staying in my lane, hand-held (duh) here is the result!
Pretty classy, yes? Well, except that the dog is really a picture of A dog pasted on the door of the van! ha ha.
Some beautiful, evocative images in there. Also some that I didn't really care for. I most liked the more up-close-and-personal images more than the car-in-environment set.
I wonder how a "dogs in cars" challenge would fare?
Some really wonderful pics. My favorite is Maus, the greyhound in the blue SLC
Maus was great, but Hector and Margaux were wonderful too!
I don't know, Alfie makes me laugh and cry at the same time :-) And Burt, Prospero 2, and Chara (who made me happy, BTW)... oh heck, I love most of them.
Kirbic, I know what you mean, but Shep, in the VW van on the beach, is incredible.
hmmmm... just thinking out loud here. I love the post and the photos but in reading the opening page I got the feeling that the idea of this project was to visualize why NOT to subject an animal to the feeling of abandonment? I mean, these photos are terrific but I'm guessing that the photographer spent time capturing animals he found left in cars...
I'm a bit afraid that if we used this as a challenge topic people might think that to go PUT their dog in their car and take a picture of them feeling sad and abandoned would be a GOOD idea?
Lyn, if you read below, these are all set up. And yes, HIS intent was to show that fear of abandonment and alone-ness. But that does not necessarily have to be the intent of images captured for DPC.
