I have a 22" beauty dish and I adore it. I would NOT categorize it as more portable as it cannot be folded up, and it does take up a good amount of space. The grid is also quite delicate. So I would not say it is more convenient to take to locations, although I do take it everywhere. It is most definitely easier to set up than a soft box...
Regarding the quality of light, it is truly a matter of personal taste. I use it with both a grid (very focused beam) and a shower cap (softer, brighter, wider beam). Placement is very important when using the grid, but with the shower cap, you can have a nice balance of wide but somewhat focused. I think of it as something of a spotlight, that is how definite the edges can be. I tend to prefer more dramatic lighting, and I think that is the main difference between a beauty dish and a soft box. |
