I had real problems attempting to set up a shot last night using a couple of different triggers with my Canon 40D and my Canon Speedlite 430 EXII
I was unable to get the Speedlite to work with either. I don't think I have ever got these to work so I wonder if I have just been unlucky and have 2 faulty bits of hardware or if I am being dumb or I guess there could be a problem with the Canon 40D.
The Speedlite works correctly when attached to the hotshoe.
Now when testing with the radio triggers, I when I press the shutter on the camera, the little light on the trigger attached to the Speedlite flashed so it looks like the triggers are communicating with each other.
When the Speedlite is connected to the camera hotshoe, I can access the following Flash Control setting in the menu
"External flash func. setting"
However when the trigger is attached to the hotshoe and its associated trigger attached to the speedlite
When I try to access the "External flash func. setting" menu setting I get the following error:
"This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off.
I have the trigger switches on both triggers set the same. Both have the switch on 1 and 2 set. I have tried all combinations with the same results.
Note I have brand new Duracell batteries in the Speedlite and the trigger.
With the cable trigger, I also cannot access the "External flash func. setting" and get the same error.

I am a bit suspicious the issue could be related to the camera as I notice when the camera is in the preset modes such as "Portrait", if I try to take a photo in low light the built in Flash pops up. However when I try in the "P" creative mode, it doers not. I am sure it should pop up in this mode in low light but perhaps I am just being dumb.
Anyway any troubleshooting advice appreciated. I was really looking forward to setting up a smoke shot but this was a real show stopper.
