I would like to ask all of the Nikon users out there for opinions. I have been a D70 user for quite a while and I am finally ready to upgrade to a new model. I want to know opinions on the best current model to buy that is comparable in features and options to the D70. I'm not so concerned with the price, but the higher end models are still out of my reach. I have read some reviews on the D3200 and it seems as though that is a lower-end option that still retains the semi-pro quality that I want.
Nikon has certainly expanded their line, so I would like to know what opinions you might have to offer on what my next purchase should be.
I would probably go with the D7000 as it still has the 1.5 crop and the focus motor like the D70. I don't think the D3200 has the focus motor in the camera.

Is the D600 in your reach? Because that's the cheapest full frame. Plus, if you've used crop frame enough, its time to move on to a full frame. I've heard lots of awesome things from D600 users. If not D600, then yes, go for the D7000.

I have both. If you need super high ISO performances, get it, otherwise D7000 can be enough and you can get cheaper lenses for ASP-C sensor. Moreover D600 still suffer of sensor dust issues (mine included) so maybe it's not the right moment to buy it.
Depending on your budget I suggest exploring the D7100.
IMO not an interesting improvement of D7000
I personally would get the D7100 for two reasons. First, I'd be using it for wildlife, and 24Mp is significantly more pixels on animal. Second, the D7100 has a much nicer autofocus system.
But, I suspect whitetiger is on a tight budget, and the D7000 is a great camera for less money, especially if he buys used.
I shot professionaly with them for about 3 to 4 years until I've upgraded one to the D300 but still kept the other until I finally bought the D700.
If you like the D70 and are really used to it, anything less than the D7000 will be a kind of a downgrade in therms of handling, despite in terms of sensor you will get a better performer with the D3200.
The D7000 will be a killer at this time because the price should be droping as the new D7100 starts to hit the stores and they want to get rid of onld models to be able to sell the new ones at a more premium price.
Froma a person that came from 6MP the 16 of the D7000 will be more than enough and the andling will be simillar to some extend, with a lot better performance.
I'd go 7100. The 600 involves heavier lenses. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a 7100. I am not happy with the idea of heavier lenses...I bought the D600 for the 24 MP ... but the 7100 is better for landscapes, without a AA filter, and lighter lenses!
I'll no doubt have a 7000 to sell too.

I have a D7000 now, and have owned in the past - D: 50,40,200 & 300s. If the D7100 does indeed have a better AF system of 51 areas (which by specs it does) I would go for it. I miss the AF system I had on the D300s with my D7000 (39 af areas), but generally love everything else.
Edited for this: In terms of handling, the D7000 does have all the external controls you would want or are used to, some might just be in a different spot. The only "handling" issue then would be if you don't like a smaller/lighter camera body. I have the Nikon Battery pack on my D7000 and it brings it up to size and makes it last for ever.... without it, it does seem very small for my hands - but still a great DX.
This discussion has me researching a new camera body now (the D7000 as suggested by so many!) I also have a very old D70 which isn't working right anymore and I am not sure I want to pony up for the repair when I could put that money toward a new body instead.
I'm pretty sure I've never seen such strong agreement in the forums here before. It has me thinking I should go buy a D7000 myself.

Although I have to agree with Neil about the weight of these FF cameras......I think this darn 28-300 I have on my D600 weighs more than my D7000, 18-200, & battery pack combined! LOL!!!
