Not a bad marketing scheme. Other companies have been doing this for years with other software. Unlikely to cannibalize existing sales of the latest and greatest and gets people using their product.

I would think PSE9 would be better. It's a lot newer, but then again it isn't free. I have PS CS5, but I'm going to grab CS2 anyway to pick up the other parts of the suite.
In a word, no. You could convert them to DNG, however, and they should open at that point, I think. I can't remember if CS2 supported DNG though. In any case, you'd be working with an ancient version of ACR. Might actually be easier to convert with the camera manufacturer's software. Or convert with Lightroom and work with JPEG or TIFF in Ps.

Correct, I'm not interested in Photoshop CS2, but I do want to play around with Illustrator CS2 and Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. Premiere might be a little too dated for current video, but I want to give it a shot.
So as it turns out you can only legally install if you have a valid copy.

You have heard wrong! Adobe is absolutely not providing free copies of CS2!
What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2 and that for existing licensed users of CS2 who need to reinstall their software, copies of CS2 that don't require activation but do require valid serial numbers are available. (Special serial numbers are provided on the page for each product download.) See .
You are only legally entitled to download and install with that serial number if you have a valid license to the product!
