random one, grabbed my classic 5d to shoot for celebrations challenge shot a few, checked on computer, card back in shot some more, checked on computer card back in using a remote trigger on manual focus beeped to say was in focus but wouldnt fire, tried shutter button nothing
now no lcd, no shutter even with trigger, no error codes top display is fine all buttons work
removed batteries, grip, system battery etc
plugged it in but as i have newer eos utility it doesnt see it
installed the correct eos utility on laptop and still wont see it but maybe it was because i was using 5d mkii lead.
no idea now other than utilising my cps and sending it to canon
Boy, sure sounds like a *major* electronics malfunction :-( Obviously getting power if the top display and buttons work. I take it you can't get the rear LCD to come on even to display the menu?
Do you have a shutter release cable attached? If yes, it might be in lock mode for long exposure. (This happened to me recently and produced same symptoms.)
there was a wireless dorr remote attached when it happened, not anymore ive tried a wired remote to see if it was a shutter button but alas no, reading round there is a problem with the pcb on them i'll fire it off to CPS tomorrow see what they quote not sure what to do if they want £250 to repair
ive tried every possibility i can think of, ive noticed changing shutter speed in M has gone slow its not happy the strange thing was it was fine then nothing my 20d is 12 years or more old no problems and over 250k accuations with me

Repair it, no doubt. The 5D is still worth $700, so any repair costs could be easily recovered, but frankly, just having it available (the 5D is still amazing) is worth the money.
*shrug*
It could just be a loose cable, you could take the thing apart (not that hard!) and try to check it - or you might just try the "percussive repair" technique. (hit it).
cory i feel insulted that you'd think i havent tried the bog standard repair first, im an ex sun engineer, roadie and now work with heavy machinery the first tool you reach for is the 4lb lump hammer :) but its had two knock on the table and a good shake

Cannot help with the larger issue but that rattle is the thingi that tells the camera which way it's been held so it can rotate the images the right way up - don't go hitting that part until it stops rattling :-).
