Fellow shutter snappers..... I'm looking into a new flash seeing as Nikon went mental and stopped producing the SB-800... i'm looking at the SB-900 or 910.... just wondering if anyone has any feed back on either one.. it will be working along side an SB-800 fired with CyberSyncs. If there is another Nikon flash that you think would be better i'd be happy to hear about it as well. I know the 900 and 910 are a little too much flash, but.. I don't know a lot about flashes and it seems like they are the closest to the SB-800 I already own.
900 had heat issues when continuously used in a short duration, the 910 resolved that; as per the information i found out when the 800's went bust (i was planning on buying one but didn't have the money at the time).
i have a 700 that i enjoy, 910 wasn't worth the price jump for me at this stage.
Ah Ryan, Yes, thats what i'm trying to decide also..... the 910 is pricey... where i'm at i'm not sure if I need to power of the 910... I shoot all my flashes manual so the i or e - TTL crap isn't any good for me I like being able to control it all myself.... If I could find another 800 i'd buy it in a heart beat because i already know how to use it and I love it!
While there has been a lot of people complaining about "overheating" issues with the sb900 let me tell you some real world things.
I shot "Strobist" with 3 of these, and at times light up entire gyms with them on 1/4 +1/3 power fired remotely for strobing basketball and
volleyball at the local JUCO. I shoot 120 shots or more in the course of a game. And I have NEVER had a single overheat condition. These sb900's
were bought brand new by me when I moved over to Nikon. And they all still work. I also use them on camera, off camera, and sometimes in the studio.
SB800's are sold every day on Fredmiranda.com buy and sell forums for less than $250. I'd still rather pay a bit over 300 for a used SB900 for the added features.

Using cybersyncs means you're not shooting TTL -- so why are you spending so much money on a flash? You're paying through the nose for a feature you don't even use. You can pick up three LP160s or more for the same price of one Nikon TTL flash.
i was thinking of the SB-900 but the overheating issues made me wary, especially when otherwise devoted lovers of that flash complained about the ear-splitting overheating screech...esp when it took place during times like shooting a wedding.
So I saved my pennies and bought the SB-910 brand-new, making it pretty much the only truly piece of pro quality equipment I own. Now that I have some idea as to how to use it and what it can do, I LOVE it. Yeah it's a lot of power, so dial it down when you need less flash! Easy! Recently I shot it 5 times during a 10-second exposure, handheld, Manual setting at 1/8 power. Was only able to squeeze off two flashes with my mini-wide slave during the same time frame.
I have the SB910 and an SB800. While the 800 is no slouch, the 910 is beautiful with a great menu system, overheating warning, battery levels and more. The 900 had very bad overheating issues as mentioned. That's why the SB910 was released. Highly recommend the SB910
