The only Canon SX260 I can find is an SX260-HS, so I'll presume that is what you are talking about.
Since you are looking at this to sub for a DSLR you cannot afford right now, I say by all means go with the Powershot S100. It shoots RAW and will in all likelyhood have superior image quality conpared to your other choice. I have had two similar cameras in Canon's line, a Powershot G11 (which uses nearly the same sensor & lens) and currently an S90 (a direct predecessor model to the S100).
Both of them have produced excellent images for me and have many of the features of a DSLR in a smaller package. You can learn to work within the limitation of the shorter zoom, and you will appreciate the better image quality and flexibility of being able to shoot in RAW.
Have you considered a slightly used DSLR, since that is what you have stated you would ultimately like anyway?
BTW, welcome to DPC. Stay for spell, lurk a bit, put on your thickest skin and enter some challenges with your new camera.
