I honestly don't know. I just became aware of the phenomenon, as it were, but I haven't tried to analyze it :-)

The water drop images really can be pretty pictures and for that reason score well here. Some have truly perfected the process and produced some great results - i'm sure they got bored of trying to improve perfection and moved on to new topics, such as B&W "street/life" shots trying to out-do Jagar, or expert editing to keep up with Samantha and Christoph.
For that i'm thankful that when i do try i won't have masters around here making me look bad.
I always liked a lot of the water drops really and kind of admired the almost zen-like patience of those who do them over and over in order to get a perfect drop. And i liked the alien sculpture-like results. Same with insect macros. Always found those interesting just because i find insects fascinating.
Wine glasses, however, are a differnt matter altogether. No amount of fancy light and tiny upside down glasses could make me find them anything other than tedious. Yawn.
