So my CyberSyncs have arrived and I realized that i've never used these before so i'm not sure how to set up my SB-800? I want to shoot in manual mode and control the flash output from the back of my camera. I don't know what to set the SB-800 to.. I have it on Channel 1 and the CyberSync set to channel 1 as well, but then I see there's a Group A in the menu on the back of my D700? so do I have to make sure the SB-800 has M 1/1 beside the Group A? i'm confused on how to set all of this up? please help
Cybers are no CLS/ttl, so the groups are irrelevant.... They will fire when they get the fire signal from te transmitter.... It's all manual. You own setting the remote flashes to the power level you want - in manual.
Yes manually from the flash but ap will also control it (although changing ap has impacts on the dof) - think of having 2 exposures in one picture.... essentially (rule of thumb and not 100% true) aperture controls the flash exposure and shutter speed controls the ambient exposure (you get 5 variables instead of 3 with flash - iso, ap, ss as usual but add flash to subject distance and flash power).
Hit strobist.com and read lighting 101 as that will help a lot with your questions. I find Zack Arias's one light a better primer but the strobist is all free so check it first.
ok thanks rob... I have Zack's One Light... I get most of that I just didn't know how to set up the SB-800 to work with the CyberSync's... I was use to using the pop up flash on the D700 and using the built-in flash menu to control the flash out put. When I got the CyberSync's I realized I can't go into the cameras menu and change the flash power that way... so I wasn't sure what menu I needed to get into on the SB-800 to control the flash.. i think I have it now.... just sucks you have to manually do it from the flash because most of the time I have the flash up in a Westcott Orb, so it's a pain in the ass to always be getting into the Orb to change flash power.

Sorry my bad... I read it to be struggling with the whole thing rather then the mechanics of a specific flash..... Have fun... That One Light is a great resource to start with.
