I finally made the leap. I waited and waited and pulled the trigger today because I had the cash on hand. I'm really hoping I notice a difference in the area of bokeh and ISO performance. I shoot strictly portraits and work a lot with shallow DOF.
Will I notice? lol.
Also, if anyone is interested in buying a 7D that's in mint condition or a Canon 17-55 2.8 IS also in mint condition please let me know. I take very good care of my equipment.
Great time to make the leap, IMO. The price on the 5Dii is really attractive, and there's no telling how much longer it will be available new. With the comparatively high price of the 5Diii, the Mkii is really attractive.
Glad to hear. While the ISO performance on the 7D is okay for what I used it for, I can't say I was impressed. I don't think I was ever comfortable going over 1000. And the DOF just isn't clean or creamy -- nothing compared to images I've seen out of the 5D series.
I am considering upgrading from my Canon T2i, and I was thinking either the 7D or the 5DII. My daughter also uses my camera to shoot high school sports for an area sports website, and I was using her need to shoot at higher ISO's as part of my justification to upgrade. I was leaning toward the 5DII, but it sounds like the 7D might be better for the sports (e.g., better focusing technology and faster frame rate).

Correct on both counts; crisper focusing and a better frame rate. Also, the crop factor makes your 70-300mm the equivalent of 480mm at the long end, which is a real plus. 300mm isn't very long on a FF camera...
I went from a 30D to a 7D (loved the focusing and crop) to a 5DII. The IQ on the 5DII is simply stunning, sometimes I have to pinch myself and ask if I really took some of the shots I have with it. If you do not NEED it for sports, it is a superb camera that does not disappoint.

The 7D I had was total junk above 400iso ,I use it for knocking in nails now, best thing it can do.
JulietNN had lots of trouble with hers at high iso too, but maybe it depends on the copy you get.

I would NEVER recommend one.
I shoot at 1600 ISO with my 7D when I need to and get some pretty decent shots. You can get rid of the noise in post. I know you'd rather not have to get rid of the noise in post, but I'm still getting very workable shots.

I was too lazy to delete your words... as I'm on my phone at the moment.

For sports, the AF system on the 7D is great. Coupled with a good lens you can get some decent shots under bad conditions. I took this sequence at a gymnastics competition inside a hockey arena. Shot with a Canon 70-200 2.8II at ISO 3200. There was definitely a fair amount of noise (it was at 3200 after all) but I was really impressed with the tracking ability of AF in servo mode in poor light.
This is a burst of 9 shots with the gymnast (my daughter) running and vaulting towards me. To make matters worse, I am shooting through the dirty, scratched up glass of the arena. Hopefully she won't shoot me for including the funny face shot as she hits the springboard ;)
These pics are after running Topaz denoise at moderate to strong.
