Don't. Just buy it. It's what I'd do.
edit - It's how I ended up getting into photography in the first place. Bought the 70-200mm f/2.8 along with the D90 two years ago. From there I've never looked back.

Yeah I agree, I'm still surprised when I turn around and see it looking back at me! It doesn't hurt that much, its the best value for money right now in my opinion.

I wont be buying anything that extravagant (This year :D) I'm looking at gradual purchases of a 50mm, 28mm and a 85mm.

If the 800 busted your budget, you can shoot with the older Ai Nikon manual lenses. They are relatively inexpensive if you shop on line for them. They will work with the 800 and are made for full frame cameras.
I bought a manual 50mm f1.4 Nikkor a couple of weeks ago for under $50.
Of course, if you can swing the bucks, shooting with the newer AF glass would be much more convenient and you will probably get a lot higher ratio of "keeper" photos than with the manual lenses.
You should be able to pick up the old 28-70s F/2.8 for about $900, the 24-70s will run about $1800, you won't be disappointed with the 28-70 on the D800, they just don't make them anymore. Ebay

What?! I find Canon lenses on the whole to be a lot pricier than Nikon.
I Agree, I'm finding the switch to Nikon great value for money.

I'm all for older lenses and experimenting, I do a lot of work with film but for my D800 I'm going to try keep them new.

It was time for an upgrade and full frame was the only option for me, the 5D mark 3 was not worth the extra money in my opinion, even if they happened to be the same price I felt the D800 suited me better.

Get the 50mm f1.4D first, its a cracker. the 28-70 is stunning too, depends on your style, you may fancy getting primes. so add the 85 f1.8D and 35 f2D to the list ... enjoy it, its a fantastic machine.

Few hundred?
My D600 was almost $1000 cheaper than the D800.
I picked up my D800 a month ago. I was considering the D600 as well, but though that the $1000 difference would partially be eaten up by having to buy new cards. I had about 64 Gb in different CF cards that are useless in the 600, but can be used in the 800. That, and the fact that you get a better overall product in the 800 made the choice easy for me.

Almost all the lenses I care about seem to be around 25% more expensive for the nikkor equivalent (in the UK); 17-40mm/16-35mm f/4, 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 135mm f/2. Owning those four lenses for Canon instead of Nikon I have enough savings for a second body.
I don't shoot full frame digital, but I do shoot film and I'd also suggest the older "Beast" 28-70 2.8. It's a great lens. The 85 1.8d is wonderful too, and focuses extremely fast on both my D300 and my F100.
