Yeah, be quick!
Because you can get so close to the cyclists they flash by you very fast compared to standing 50 to 200m away like at a motorcycle race. To pan with such a close distance is very hard. So try to shoot them head on, don't wait until they are near you, especially if your camera has a long shutter lag.
Because there are so many in a tight packed group it is very hard to pick out the ones who you want shots off.
Las week we had the Round of Holland passing by here, but I couldn't get any shots. I stood 50cm (between 1 and 2 feet I believe) from them, way too close.
Just try to make some interesting compositions, wait for the right moments and have a good time.
