I don't know if you're a "jerk" but it's not really cool calling out a specific photo in that way. I gave it a 7, so you're kind of calling me out as well. If you are trying to understand how and why different people vote differently - give it up. Let it go. Go have a beer.
That said, I don't mind telling you that I gave it a 7 because I found it very appealing. Not knockout eye-candy, but well done, IMO. I can go take a look at your portfolio and look at what scores I gave you (if any) and let you know why (if I didn't already) - would that help you?
<-- I gave this an 8. Well above the average of all other voters. Good lighting, composition, a little edgy - and tells a story- even if I made one up in my head when I looked at it.

Ok - you have to put it in context - Metal on Metal - if you put ANY of the entries in a Free Study, my guess is they would all be 4's & 5's. So compared to all the other pics in that challenge, it deserved a 7 from me. ...and a 2 from someone else and a 10 from a couple other voters, etc etc.
By the way, I have entered things I totally expected to flop or that I didn't put much effort into and they fared surprisingly well. It doesn't much matter what the person who enters it thinks of it or thinks it will score - the voters are the ones that count and there are a myriad of things that influence voters nad influence them differently at different times.
To be honest, I was surprised it did so well. It did match the brief well as there are several metal elements on top of each other and I thought the processing was OK however I was totally shocked to see if at one point have 6.9. I am certainly not complaining! Strangely my scoring for this challenge was spot on in terms of which other entries were in the top 10.
It is comforting to know that voters often think differently to ones own opinion and in future I will not hesitate to enter photos that I am unsure about. It is more fun having a photo in a challenge than none at all::)
I was really drawn to it, although I didn't vote in this challenge, I would have given it a good score because something about it had the "wow" factor for me. But the original did absolutely nothing for me - which goes to show that my "newbie" mind still loved the HDR and the light rings and the steel wool and the fancy things I'm just learning to do.
But it was a lovely photo - intriguing and full of potential "story", which I made up in my head as Art does.

A 7 photo is a 7 photo no matter what the theme as long as it applies to the theme. Free Study is essentially "No Theme, Anything Goes (within editing rules). If a photo doesn't fit the theme, it should be penalized, but if it fits the theme, it should score the same no matter what.
That photo in question could fit: Metal on Metal, Locks, Chains, Rust, and yes Free Study. And should be scored the same way IMO in each.
I'm sure you mean tonemapping, because HDR is a specific technique involving multiple exposures. Well done HDR does not always have the distinctive look that most people associate with it.
I think you'll find your problem, as well as everyone else's, I'm the form of a"5". I say we boycott to get rid of just the "5" button :) some people also abuse the lower numbers. In fact a few people in this forum with well below a 5 voting average and tons of votes cast which means 1,2,3,4 abuse! Staying at or above a 5 average would be a healthy voter IMO.

I disagree. I think the quality of the other entries in a challenge should affect the score of a particular image. If I used your logic, very few images would get 8, 9, or 10. As it is, I make sure there's at least one in each category in every challenge.
That's it then. From now on all flower shots get a 3.
Let's include bugs with green BG, buildings from ofd street angle views, wineglasses, waterdrops, B&W portraits of old people, B&W portraits of young people, B&W portraits of people, ........
