Finally sent the 7D off because I'm sick of the noise. Was stupid and never sent it in when I first got it, because everything I sent to canon, canon said was normal noise. huh uh. nope. Stupid not to have done it when it was new and under warranty, but I figured it would be like the 20D -- send it in -- they just reset everything and send it back without any change.
If nothing else, it will come back cleaner (having it cleaned while there.)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hopeful -- but doubting. :)
I really struggle with the noise from my 50D even at low ISO settings, granted, I really am picky, but it's more than I like in the sky in particular, even at ISO 100.
Looking at the charts, the 7D is slightly more noisy than the 50D, and compared to the 5D, both are more similar than not.
Given that the 5D tends to make me pretty happy, I tend to think it's just a crop-sensor noise issue that is normal... I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but that's my observation, and I know I wasn't happy with noise until this body.
My 50D still has it's place, but it's not my go to body for work that I want to be noise free(ish).

That's what I'm afraid of. I can't use the majority of my photos at 1:1, because the noise is too much. My 40D was much better. But so many people swear by the lack of noise on the 7D. :(
I've always been surprised by the noise on mine too. Especially when I use HDR.
Curious to see what your ISO was, but HDR always boosts noise, so it isn't entirely a fair thing to call the body out for, unless you're comparing it specifically to other HDR outputs.

Not just "HDR" either; using any of the Topaz or Nik type of plugin to amp local-area contrast will magnify whatever noise is there.
Buy a 5Dii. Did a family portrait session and was using 1000 iso with excellent results. Heck even 3200 with a little noise reduction is still acceptable.
