Although I've known about the PNG file type for quite some time, I had no idea how amazing it is. It's lossless and is able to incorporate a gamma setting with the image. A friend showed me this link (//www.webcolors.freeserve.co.uk/png/) and if it's possible for our site, I'd like to see PNG support here at DPC in the future.
Sure have. Given the strict bandwidth requirements here, I think this should be a priority. JPEG compression is killing me (not that I'm saying it's affecting my scores...that's my brain compression).
I've used PNG for quite some time, but only for raster conversions of vector images. For photos, it produces large files, since the compression is lossless. An average DPC file increases in size more than 3x if you save as PNG.
I just did a little experiment based on what you said, Kirbic. The RAW (cropped/resized) file is 876kb and the PNG-24 file is 363kb which is still too big for DPC. PNG-8 looked horrible. I guess it all boils down to file size. Hey, maybe we need to add broadband connections to the list of requirements at DPC along with calibrated monitors! :D (just joking)
