The market for fine art photography may not be all that small, but fine art photography is incredibly varied. A given artist style may only interest a very small subset of people that like fine art photography. This leaves any give artist with a very small market.
I also think the average Joe has a hard time spending a lot of money on a photo. It's easier for someone to put a high value on a painting because it's something that most people don't think they will every be able to create themselves. For photos many people think you can just point a camera at something and push a button, why should I spend so much money for someone else to push the button? |
