Some people might be more inclined to leave feedback if it could be a bit quicker for the voter. Have you ever thought about having another form that gives the voter to assign a number to each part of the photo, such as
Meets the Challenge:
Composition:
Clarity:
Originality:
Etc.:
It would also be a reminder to newbies what issues should determine a good photo for the challenge.
They could even be averaged out for the final vote number...
Just a thought, I would like to see my photos rated in such as fashion by those voting, and would like to do the same for others. I comment on almost every photo I vote on, and it is really time consuming.
This has been discussed quite a few times. Every time it comes up, it boils down to no one 'having enuff time' to vote like that... it's unfortunate because i think it would be a better way of voting also...
The problem I see with comments is that if you don't have an exceptionally good or bad photo, you get very few comments. If I look back at my photos, the ones that got the most are the best and the worst. Unfortunatly, most of mine are in the middle.
My voting/commenting process is to finish my voting first. Then I comment. When I comment, I comment on one of the best, then I go to the end and vote on one of the lowest, then I go to the middle and comment on a mid range photo. I realize that there's a lot of jumping around, but as one who usually scores in the middle, and since I don't have the time or bandwidth to comment on them all, I like to make sure that my comments are more evenly distributed.
There could be an option of chosing one way or the other, just like we have an option to leave a comment and vote or just vote. It wouldn't have to be mandatory.

Here's an idea. It may be difficult to explain so please bear with me. It's much like what has already been suggested but with some options. In the ratings page for a photo we have two voting methods and you can choose one or the other, not both.
Method 1: There is several categories, such as Visual Impact, Technical value, Meets the Challenge, Composition, and so on, and next to each category there is a rating scale like we have now. When each box has a number in it then the site computes your final rating for the photo based on averaging the numbers, and displays it next to that category. Then you move on to the next photo.
Method 2: Exactly how we have it now, check your single rating for the photo and move on to the next photo.
A comment box will still be available to provide a full critque.
This would give the voters complete control over how little or how much time and thoroughness they want to spend on each photo.

i am fed up with not getting comments .. comments would be nice, but ifnot at least some idea of why i am not getting comments.
Maybe both the ratings scores would be anonymous and keep the written critique with the voters username, so that people wouldn't be afraid of hurting someone's pride by giving them a low score in the areas that they really feel need improvement.

As a first time entrant I understand what you mean - only 2 comments from 90 votes, and they didn't discuss the quality of the image. I'm dying to know what people think (I suspect it's technically ok but just a little boring, but I'd love confirmation).
Personally I comment on 1 in 4 votes (ie: 500 votes, 125 comments) - it's not deliberately 1 in 4, that's just what my stats say. If this similar to other people? Perhaps the "helpful comments" button just implemented will offer some kind of reward / incentive?
I have one comment and 100 votes in landscape. I just went and left about 50 comments so that I would have a right to complain. I'm guessing that people are gonna be doing well just to get done voting this week, but it IS frustrating.

accordning to my stats i have voted 54 times and made 154 comments ... interesting ... i must remember to vote more
I am glad to see i already have some helpfull marks, as i do try
and sometime i feel myself being less helpfull so i stop as i know i am getting fed up .. have a break and go again some other time.
scary thing is .. i feel really bad .. my average mark is .. gulp .. 3.7 and man i don't mean to be low .. but i guess that is calculated from votes i have made and have been accepted which is only 54 .. aparently .. hang on .. should we put muych stock in these stas .. i mean .. it tells me 54 votes 154 comments .. how can that be ? and i give out plently of high scores hell sometime i find myself going back and redoing votes as i messed up and the last few photos needed 11's and 12's compared to the 10's i gave out

I'm all for this.
As you old timers know I used to leave comments with a score in each of several categories. I got kind of burned out on it though as I would leave a hundred or so comments and recieve five or maybe 10 coments on my picture. A few people would take the time to PM me and tell me how much they appreciated my comments (which was really great), but the BIG majority seems to just take them with a grain of salt. I have been commenting only on those that just reach out and pull me in, rather it be very good or much in need of help.
No matter what, we all need to keep having fun and taking pictures we like!!!!

Ive got to say that I am trying to comment on more pictures and trying to be as constructive as possible. But with this many entries I cant possibly comment on all , I do vote on all however. A simpler check box method would be better allowing also for specific input.
