I just bought a white box lens.

From what I read about white box items, it sounded like you still had the full warranty. There is no warranty card and there's no manual for this lens. Even if it's taken out of a kit, shouldn't there be a manual and a warranty card?

How do I know this is new and not refurbished? (the warranty card would have given me a clue...)

I've had white box computer equipment and the receipt was meant to be proof for problems via the vendor, not manufacturer. Not sure how lenses are, but I'd call (not email) the vendor or go in person looking for warranty cards etc.
It may be that they we're in a kit box, and on hand... Or maybe not.

You may want to purchase a 3rd party warranty. There are a couple of good ones out there. I have had good experience with the "Square Trade Warranty" people re eBay.

call canon and ask them, if not and its important to you, send it back as you were under the impression it came with a warranty.
