I had been looking online at different media storage devices and had about the X's Drive and went to go buy that, but couldn't find a 2.5 HD on the computer geeks site. I found this MindStor device thing on Steve's Digicams review site. His review on it was good and I found a 10gig storage for $199. I figured it was about $50 more than the X's Drive and it had a screen to let me know what it was doing and to go through the pictures on it. Does anyone else have this and if so what do you think? thanks

Work got me a 20GB MindStor and it generally works great. I very occasionally will have an image that doesn't transfer correctly and seems to lose parts of a color layer. So far I've been lucky enough not to have it happen to a REALLY important shot, but I suppose the odds are that it will happen some day.

One note of clarification just to make sure you know: the MindStor does have a screen and you can see directory structure and file names, but you can't view the actual images. I wasn't sure if you were clear on that based on your post.

yeah, I saw that it didn't show the pictures, but you can make sure that the files are there on the hard drive. I read that some people lose part of the color on the X's Drive too. So there isn't a difference overall there. That's cool that your work got you a 20GB drive. The Willey would have never done that for me while I was working for them. I'm just going to school at SLCC right now. And I've got to run to class.

I was looking at that thing too recently. I saw a great offer from my usual camera shop, they had one they used to show to customers.

But after doing some searches for user reviews, I decided not to buy it. I read to many problems / negative reviews. That included people who had to return it twice.....

I sometimes wonder about user reviews -- I read them and do a lot of research myself -- but then I think -- aren't you more likely to get lots of negative feedback from people simply because they're upset and want the world to know? :-)

With that said -- I did have to return the MindStor to get it fixed when it stopped reading cards after a couple of months of use (and I tend to be a little hard on equipment simply because it's getting a LOT of use at work). But after going through the relatively standard "can you get it to work by following these directions," they very nicely told me to send it in and they fixed it. So no complaints in the customer service department either.
