i need a new camera bag. have a backpack now but its small and a pain to take off, open and switch my lenses from.
so i need one a little larger, maybe a messenger style bag that isn't too bulky, offers decent protection from banging around and is has accessibility where i can easily reach in and grab and switch my lenses.

I like my Lowepro Slingshot 202AW for convenience. When swung around to the side or front, I can get at almost the entire bag contents easily and walk around with it like a shoulder bag. Holds my camera and two additional lenses, plus a flash and/or other gadgets. I have several other bags for different uses, but the Slingshot seems to fit your description of what you want.
It needs to hold my 60d, a 50mm and an 85, plus my 10-22. Also a flash and some radio triggers.
The Slingshot will hold all that. I can carry in the main compartment:
-50D with 18-135 lens attached
-Tamron 10-24
-Tamron 70-300
-A few small items like filters in the remaining space
Then I have the upper compartment which can hold a flash, plus a few small items in addition
And there is a small front compartment where I put my batteries.
Memory cards go in the pockets that are built into the underside of the main compartment lid.

There is a sternum strap to keep the bag stable on your back when moving around. The strap stows away when not needed. Also a built in rain hood that stows. And a tripod holder.
Just got the lowerpro 202AW. Amazon had it for $60. Why it was cheaper then the 102, not sure, but $60 is a no brainer.
Good price for that, I think you will like that bag. I've got several other bags I regularly use.
-The Slingshot is the most convenient to access on the go and holds a lot.
-A Small Tamrac shoulder bag, that is just enough to hold the camera, 1 extra lens, batteries & cards. Good for walkabouts when I want to travel light.
-A backpack style bag with a laptop compartment which I use to hold a Camelbak reservoir for extended events in summer heat.
I own a Crumpler 5 millon dollar bag....which is more like a small messenger bag. I can get my camera and three lens, and a flash in there and other small stuff...but, I have gone mirror-less and the weight and bulk is gone!! I love it!!
Its nice. well padded. has lots of room. my general gear setup is 2-3 lenses, one body, 1 speedlite, one battery pack, some small tools like flags, and a tt5/tt1 pocketqizard pair.
