OK - I just finished scoring my inital pass of Vanishing Point. There were several images where the thumbnail was nearly as big as the submitted image. For me - it is impossible to adequately judge as I can't really look critically at focus for example.
I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt - and scored them as if a better size would not expose any flaws. But I also made (or will make) comments about the size.
Out of curiosity - how do you score the little guys? Do you deduct points?
I vote pretty low for these. Usually a 2 or 3, depending on the composition. I also mention that the image is too small to get an idea of the quality and that they should take advantage of the maximum 640 which is allowed.
I usually assume that they're new, and vote the photo on the merits of what I can see (along with a comment on the size). I couldn't slap a promising photo with an automatic 1 just because it could be bigger.

Thank you for this thread. It will help more people like me. I submitted a photo for the first time and it is one of the small ones. I did not realize that it was going to be that small when I submitted it. And I know that’s my fault and whatever score I get, I deserve because of my mistakes. I just thank everyone that has posted a comment; it will help me learn and hopefully it will help me improve my picture quality.
Again thanks for this tread. I think it will be helpful not only me but others.
If it's size doesn't get in the way of my ability to judge it and appreciate it then I will still score it highly.
However sometimes smaller images are harder to judge as I can't really see the detail as well as I'd like. In those cases I try to judge what is there as best I can but I will inevitably knock a point or two off it, not specifically for it's small size but because I can't see it well enough to really ascertain much.
