I currently own the Adobe Creative Design Premium CS5 (Academic edition). I have installed the Photoshop CS6 beta, like it a lot, and want to upgrade just Photoshop to CS6.
After combing the web I am uncertain whether I can upgrade just the Photoshop App in my Suite or if maybe all I can do is upgrade the full suite?
I'm pretty sure I can pay for just a Photoshop CS6 upgrade and use the validation code I will get together with the larger CS5 suite code. But I would hate to pay the money just to find out it won't work. I am not attending any classes presently that would allow me a student upgrade.
Does anybody know if I am good to upgrade just the one app in my suite?

Yep, I do own Photoshop CS5 as part of my Design Suite Shannon. But I have heard conflicting info about whether individual apps can be upgraded individually if they are part of a larger collection.

Okay, I called Adobe and got my answer- I'm screwed! :P Apparently Adobe regards a Suite of several apps as one product, so If I want to upgrade any of the apps within my suite I need to upgrade the whole suite.
To me this really sucks. I actually had the standalone version of Photoshop CS5 once too and gave it to a friend after upgrading to an academic full suite in order to help that friend out. So now my friend can upgrade to Photoshop CS6 for $199 and I have to upgrade the whole suite (I barely use the other apps) for $749. Not cool Adobe!
What new feature(s) of CS6 is/are so essential to processing photos that it's worth even $150? My experience is that skipping one or two upgrades is usually OK -- if Adobe says you can't upgrade from CS5 to CS7 I'd say time to start learning GIMP ... :-(

I hear you Paul, GIMP seems very appealing right now :)
I'm so used to the Adobe work flow though. I do like the new Adobe RAW engine that Lightroom 4 (which I love) can only hand off smoothly to Photoshop CS6 though. The new cropping tool and other tools in CS6 are great, and since I have paid the money to have a computer with a decent GPU, CS6 leverages that hardware better than CS5 to gain performance. So I want to upgrade- and will be taking a summer class to get academic pricing then! So given that much of my Adobe software has been purchased at academic discounts, I can't be too mad about their policy here :-/

I think that's different that the old days -- I thought they used the academic versions as "gateway drugs" to hook you on the program, but that when you graduated you could upgrade to the pro version just like anyone else. If you're still in school then just getting the new version of PSCS6 at academic pricing would make sense.
