i have had an issue lately with my PC, whenever i go into explorer and look try to copy raw files. explorer hangs and i have to do a hard reboot.
this issue has migrated across a new installation from over the weekend.
at first i thought it explorer trying to show the thumbnails so i switched to "details" view and that seems to fix it until last night when it started happening again.
i have no idea what the problem could be, anyone experienced this? its pretty annoying considering the hard reboot and all.
Perhaps an incompatibility with the RAW Codec? Do you have the Canon RAW codec installed? If you can see thumbnails and previews of the RAW files, then you have a codec installed. If not, then you will just get an icon.

You have to do a hard reboot? If Explorer hangs, it's normally possible to restart it without rebooting (you could do that even under XP). When this happens, does the system become completely unresponsive (mouse, keyboard don't work) or can you call up Task manager? If you can call up task manager, can you kill the explorer process and let it restart?
This is a very strange problem. It almost seems like there is a problem with accessing the device you are copying from or to. Exactly when does the hang occur? Is is when you select the files, or when you try to paste them? Are you dragging/dropping or using right-click/copy and right-click/paste?

unresponsive to keyboard and mouse clicks, the curser does move. its possible that eventually it would stop but i gave up waiting after a few minutes.
task manager was the first thing i tried and it wont come up.
the problem occurs when i just open and view the folder. not all of them, certian ones, i thought maybe there were too many RAWs in the folder so i deleted some from inside lightroom and it seemed to help but still occurs only not right away.
i can copy the RAW from my card to a windows folder no problem its after a while if i try to go into the explorer window to move or copy the files. as soon as i open the folder the fans starts to spin and then curser hangs.
even if it only seems to be the same folder? and even after the entire hard drive was formatted?
the folder is on my main hard drive and was copied back after i deleted and created new partitions and reinstalled windows.
That does seem to indicate that the hardware is unlikely to be the root cause. When you say that it is always the same folder, are you saying that you have other folders with the same types of files that do not result in the crashes?

tried that on the old system, didn't help, that's when I figured it might still be trying so i switched to the details view to make sure
I don't think it's file content, otherwise just displaying the folder would not trigger any error, ever. It does not seem to be related to the file type, since you have other folders of RAW files that don't have the problem. It's more likely to be a function of the structure of the folder. A couple more questions:
1.) When you copied back the files after reformatting, how exactly did you do that (what steps did you use)?
2.) If you try to copy the entire folder (without first opening it) does that work?
3.) If yes to (2), then do you get the same bad behavior when you open the copy of the folder?
well it appears those large tif were the problem, the other folder had the tiffs too at the bottom i couldn't see since it locked up before i could scroll.
saving them to a .psd and deleting the tiff fixed the problem. i guess i'll be using psd from now on.
interesting read, that's how i had to fix it. i saved my tif as a psd and deleted it from inside the photoshop save screen since i couldn't open the folder in explorer
if anything this little problem got me to upgrade my ram...
