The solution is what a lot of other photo sites already use. I don't know what it's called but you upload your image at 1000 x pixels wide and the site automatically displays it at 800 pixels wide. You then have to click on the image to see it displayed at full resolution in this case 1000 x pixels wide. The text " click to see at full size" can even be added as a standard text underneath the image by the website owners. Bytephoto.com for instance displays images at 750 x pixels wide and by clicking you see them at 1000 x pixels wide.

I vote for smaller images. I have all this expensive camera gear and I'll be damned if I want my images shown off at a higher pixel count. I'd rather keep them all at their full blown glory were only I can see them, on my PC.

This is my concern as well. I agree with allowing us to submit 2 images. But optionally.

Well DPC could change their interpolation algorithm if that's the case. Don't see why not. There is no loss of IQ with the images on the two sites i gave as examples so i don't see why DPC cannot also have an algorithm such as those two sites. Having to edit and process two different sized images for submission is just too much trouble if one can enter a 1000x pixel image that is downsized by an algorithm that results in hardly any loss of IQ.
I think this would be much better than what DPC has now. I would welcome a change to this, but would still prefer the images be shown at full resolution to start with and have a "hold to zoom out" button made available. Without this button, I am concerned that many voters would not bother to look at the higher resolution images.

Sorry to rain on the parade -- but I think it's a bad idea. People vote so fast now, I doubt that they would view all images at larger view. Plus, the image has to load twice -- once at 800 then once at 1000, which could be annoying on slower internet days.
I'm the first to admit that I'd probably only view the larger images on photos that I find interesting. For the middle/end of the pack that obviously aren't as good, I probably wouldn't bother. And I think that's a big disadvantage. Everyone should be viewed equally.
If the majority of people are wanting the larger size, why not have a button at the top that shows it in a smaller size? Have the default be the larger size, and those who can't see the whole thing can click to get smaller ?
Well just reverse the idea i suggested then. Simple. Have the larger image as the default and click on it to see the smaller (800x pixel) image.
No need for a button as you suggest at the top, just click on the image. Much faster then looking for the button if speed is your concern.

I pretty much said the same thing about such a button just above your post Wendy as well as earlier in this thread. It is so hard to make yourself heard in these forums :-O
I think the default to load first should be a larger image and if people need to see it smaller they can push a button that will quickly zoom out to reveal the image to them all at once. Otherwise many people will do just as you say you would and will only view the images that initially catch their interest at full resolution- not good. I don't know if this is possible, but I would like a way to force viewers to zoom out to see the whole image before they can vote on it if it is detected they are using a lower resolution screen.
I would assume the vast majority of viewers here at DPC now have a broadband connection, so loading a little larger image than 800 pixels will be no big deal.

Because with a button they could hold down to view it small and then when they release their finger it would snap back to large Fred (just like pinching down the size on a tablet). This would be quicker than loading two images and poking your finger in the middle of a smaller image would be ill advised ;)
Sure that's fine too. But you still don't need a button because you could just click and hold on the large image to instantly see the small version. In other words the large image would act like the button when you click it and hold it. I just don't see a problem with the other way either as for me the Bytephoto example works instantly but then maybe it's because i have a very fast internet connection so the button idea would probably be better for slower connections and tablets i guess.
