Of all my lenses my 300 f4 L is the only one that required adjustment. If that is the case it won't do any good to "send it to Canon" unless you send the Camera also- then they will adjust it just as you would. (Unless there is something wrong with the lens).
There are a bunch of step by step videos on Youtube, that is easier than reading my ramblings
I printed five targets and mounted them to some scrap plywood each one a 1/2 inch closer to the camera so when you shoot one in the middle you can see exactly which one way to adjust and have something to compare to. Probably easier ways to buld this but it works. I'll send you a picture of it if you want.
Some other advise, mount on tripod, shoot wide open, use two second timer, lock mirror up. I took a shot, loaded into Lightroom, made adjustment, and repeat.
This was my second 300 f4 L prime and neither is as sharp as my 70-200 2.8 wide open, weird but that lens is tac sharp. I'm not sure but I think the 70-200 + 1.4 teleconverter might still win the sharpness war over the 300 alone. The prime sure wins the weight war though.
