I originally bought the Lowerpro Stealth Reporter 500 AW and took it back after getting it home and seeing how HUGE it was. I exchanged it for the 300 AW, and am glad I did. When it is packed full of my gear, it is very heavy; I can't imagine lugging around an even bigger bag with even more stuff in it.
But in answer to your question, yes, the strap is padded.
I mentioned in another thread that I recently picked up a Tenba DB-15C because of a recent trip that involved air travel and not wanting to be bothered carrying both a camera and a laptop bag. I like it so much, that I haven't switched back to the 300 AW since I got it! The Quick Access Ports on the side make it great to access up to 4 lenses (or 3 lenses and a flash) without having to lay it down and open it up. Plus, I can stow my body with any of my lenses still mounted if I so desire. With the 300AW configured to fit my usual selection of lenses, I always had to store the body by itself (which is technically better anyway, but a pain when just want to stow it for 20 minutes while you grab a bite to eat or something.)
P.S. The DB-15C comes with a removable, padded waist support.
