My new work laptop has arrived and I need to transfer about 5gig+ of data from the old work laptop to the new one.
I would do this over our corporate lan, but it is VERY SLOW and will bomb out about 1/4 the way through.
I have a router I can use to network the 2 together (not on the corp lan) would this be the fastest way? Im not worried about programs since they install all that, I just dont trust them with my data files and they are slow to begin with to do anything, if I asked them to do it it would be next week before they got to it, then a few days to copy all the files.
For Ethernet, you either need a router/hub and a couple of standard cables, or a "crossover" cable which lets you connect the two computers' ports directly. If the computers both have 100Base-T ports you should get a transfer rate of (I think) something like 1-2MB/sec.
Spot on GeneralE we do this all the time. Grab a 4 port hub s(most have a crossover switch on them), a couple of network cables and plug the two laptops into the hub, setup a windows network between the two laptops and share the drive. All you have to do then is suck the data you want down to you new laptop. Works like a charm on 95,98 and XP

Either using a crossover cable or the router with 2 straight through cables will work fine.
If you're using DHCP (automatically gets you an IP address and stuff from the server) you'll have to change your setup to use a static IP address temporarily while not connected to the LAN. Give each machine a different address like 10.0.0.x such as 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2.
Or, if you also hook the router up to your corporate LAN, then the DHCP will still work but the packets will travel very fast from one laptop to the other (assuming you have a 100Mbps router and Ethernet cards!).
If you have the equpment why not just burn few DVD´s or put it on 1gig (or larger) microdirve at a time? It may take some time but something just does that.
Maybe you dont have the equpment but maybe you could lend or rent it from somewhere.

One machine is Win 2000 and the new one is XP. I just hope I have the permisions set so I can do this. They get REAL picky as to what we can and cant do on our WORK PC's.

Just use the router and cables it's quick. Just change the ips to 192.168.0.x in both and use advanced file sharing to connect to the admin shares... \\{computername}\{driveletter}$ as long as you are administrator on both machines you will be fine.
