Maybe it's just me, but I don't think there is any semblance of parity between "best" and "most sold."
By that, let's just call the LX5 the best camera on the market per amazon.
Sales are sorta pointless, since they rely so heavily on mega fanboy-ism as well as the NEED to purchase within your manufacturer (I'm not against Canon, they produce great products, but the cost of switching is huge at this point, so to make me do so, they'd have to offer an insanely better product at the same price or less). It's just a matter of money, as you note.
Myself, I chose my body/system based on what was available at the time. It was D300 v 40D, and I felt the D300 was a better fit for me, but I didn't consider the system down the line. Are there things about Nikon that frustrate me? Sure, but I'm in that system and I'm happy (notably, the nearly complete lack of high quality F4 glass that Canon has... but I'd probably have gone to 2.8 anyway, so perhaps it's not so bad... just a big gap between the consumer and 2.8 zooms).
I guess, to me, it's one of those, pick a horse, weather the storms you may have, and revel in the sunshine when its had. I think the larger manufacturers sorta swap the lead periodically, so everybody wins some, they lose some. There are perks to both systems, so choose one, stick with it, and accept that you may miss a generation of the feature you really want because your manufacturer doesn't improve there.
Or, throw your money in a pit in your backyard if you have it, that's fine too. |
