The Nikon D4 on B$H Photography is 5,999.95USD, with the current exchange rate that's about 480,000JPY. However, the starting price in the stores (Posters already up) is 685,000JPY which is 8,540.45USD. That's over 2,500USD more expensive for a product MADE IN JAPAN. WTF!!
I asked the store clerk about it and he wasn't sure I was being honest about the prices. I took out my phone, pointed to several sites, and his jaw dropped. He had no idea why. I asked "Other than warranties, what's keeping me from having a friend buy the camera over in the U.S and shipping here?" He said "Repairs..."
I'm actually going to call Nikon Japan today and see why this is...hopefully I'll have a better answer. Until then, please chime in if you know.

It might be. Until you have to send it in for any repairs.
Yep, Japan is the most expensive country on earth, I'm surprised you've only just noticed! Living in the UK I tend to get US or HK imports where convenient - even with import duty most things work out much cheaper.

It's not just the price of warranty....if you bought it overseas and had to send it back for repairs...you aren't guaranteed to get it back at all...we face that prospect every day with our post....I never got a pile of presents at Xmas...and they were posted in Australia. They found one postie in Victoria with a shipping crate. Inside was full of items he had stolen from his parcel run over 6 years...include war medals.
Maybe you need to print out the ad for the camera showing the price, take it to your boss and explain that stuff like this is why you can't afford to do weddings for $100 a pop.
It's a concept to keep packaging waste down you get a free decent quality jug/tuba wear thing for your fridge then you buy refills for it in bags to refill it. Or I think you drop the bag in and cut the corner off then pour it out the spout. All the big coffee chains over here are using them commendable idea but not yet that popular.
