There is a virtual machine for XP that you can download and run for stubborn software.
But I run everything without problems without it. And you're better off trying first, since running a virtual machine does consume resources.
I run software as old as Ecco Pro 3.0, 32 bit software from the early 90's without any trouble. I have hundreds of applications on my system, and I've never felt the need for the vitual machine.
Also, if you right click on the icon of the software you wish to run, and select properties, there should be a compatibility section. You can choose which older OS emulate and whether to disable some things that might interfere with older applications.

I've had success with this. It doesn't always work, but it often does. If the installer for an old app fails, it's also worth trying the compatibility mode tricks on that as well.
