I have the beta but since you can't transfer your library from 3.x over, I haven't done much more than just play with it for a bit. Supposedly the highlight and shadow adjustments are MUCH better, and you can make more selective adjustments than before. Will definitely be upgrading when the time comes.
I have it running on my desktop at home. It is a little buggy, crashes occasionally. It is true that it won't read or upgrade current catalogs. That's a good thing. They do not want folks using it for their primary work, since it is a beta and by definition may have some bugs. It *is* possible to import your photos but:
- If you import at their current location, Lr 4 will overwrite the sidecar files when it makes changes, and Lr 3.x will complain about it.
- You *don't* want to import everything and actually move it. Again, this is a Beta.
All in all, I really like the changes, especially the RGB curves (yay!). It will be interesting to see how the release compares to the Beta. One thing that I was disappointed about: still not support for GPU acceleration. They know folks really want this, but apparently it is very difficult to implement. At least that's what they have posted on the Adobe Forums.
The video stuff is clumsy but starting to get there... I wanted one video where they grab a snap from it - adjust and then apply that against the video to effectively grade it..... I assume they will have more video features then shown cause it makes no sense to go that way around instead of develop the video directly... Will see...
Otherwise the book thing looks long over due... not liking the tie up with a single vendor :-/ but they let you kick to a .pdf. MAYBE the other vendors can built plug-ins for that - not sure.
I would like to have seen some work on dumb collections to bring their iq to room temp but seems nothing to look for there :-/.

on my mac, lr 3 is 82 mbs, and lr 4 is 943... almost like aperture
