If you saw a picture in the Macro challenge that seemed as if it was taken with a telephoto lens instead of a macro lens would you downgrade the picture? The reason I ask is that I took a picture with the macro setting on my camera of a subject that normally would only be captured with a telphoto lens. I was able to get very close to the subject. I suspect that many people seeing the picture are downgrading it because they think that the picture was taken with a telephoto lens.
The challenge conditions plainly state that macro lens need not be used, just a good close-up of your subject.
The quality of the image is the primary consideration. That includes technical aspects as well as aesthetics.
Thanks for the clarification. Someone had commented on my picture stating that although it seemed to be taken with a telephoto instead of a macro it was still an excellent shot. So I was wondering if that was counting against me.
There are telephoto macro lenses actually. I dont think the closeness to your subject defines macro anyways. I believe its the subject to ccd ratio that tecnically defines a macro (which my lens is 1:2). What do I know though,.. the score on my photo is dropping with each click of the update button.
I took this with a 500mm telephoto back in February. The Monarch Butterfly was in a tree and at least 20-25 feet up and away. Sure is a closeup, no matter how it was achieved!

To poor for a real macro lens...Jacko give to the needy...if you have some extra macro lens lying about..:)

No, I don't care what kind of equipment was used, I just look at the picture. I would not be able to tell the type of equipment anyway.

Don't mean to be a wet noodle, but it seems from this comment, the title on the picture and subsequent comments that nobody noticed that there are 2 butterflies in this photo......
